Facebook has accused marketing firm Adscend Media of using a
spam technique known as clickjacking. This causes users to Like pages without
their permission which then appears on their homepage and takes users to other
sites.
Facebook claims that millions of users have been exposed to
this spam however Adscend Media denies
these claims. "At no time did we engage in the activity alleged in the
complaints. Adscend Media will provide a vigorous defense against these false
claims,” said the company.
Washington State has also filed a similar lawsuit which
claims that Facebook users have been misled by spam through paying for unwanted
subscriptions and giving personal information.
The state attorney general's office claimed the marketing
company had earned as much as $1.2 million a month from the practice.
“Adscend Media strictly complies with its legal obligations
under federal and state law. We are undertaking an investigation to determine
whether any of Adscend Media’s affiliates engaged in the activity alleged by
the Attorney General’s office and Facebook", they replied.
“If they did, we are fully certain that the activity was
conducted without the company’s knowledge.”
In a news conference, Ted Ullyot, Facebook's general counsel
said ”Security is an arms race. “It’s important to stay a step ahead against
spammers and scammers.”
“We will continue to use all tools at our disposal to ensure
that scammers do not profit from misusing Facebook’s services.”
