After the mass protest on January 18-19 which included
popular sites Wikipedia, Reddit, Google and Mozilla, supporters of the PIPA
slowly turned against the act, some even co-sponsors of the bill.
Marco Rubio, a freshman Republican Senator from Florida who
some consider to be a rising star, withdrew his co-sponsorship of the bill,
citing "legitimate concerns about the impact the bill could have on access
to the Internet and about a potentially unreasonable expansion of the federal
government's power to impact the Internet."
Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the chamber's longest-serving
members and another co-sponsor, described the Protect IP Act as "simply
not ready for prime time."
The tally is now up to 19 senators who have announced their
opposition of PIPA, of which seven were former co-sponsors.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to bring PIPA to a vote on
January 24. Reid rejected a request by six Senators for a postponement, saying
"this is an issue that is too important to delay."
