10 Tricks for Google Search

1. Google Phrase Search
If you type in a phrase you will realize that google will locate these words as either separately or together. To return the search as a complete phrase in the exact order just surround it with quotes “like this”.

2. Google Negative Search
Use the “-“ symbol in front of search words that you don’t want to include in the results. For example, searching “apple –iphone” would return results for apple but exclude results that would come up for iphone.

3. Google Forced Search
Google naturally excludes common words such as “where, how, and” however if you need those words included in the search then add the “+” sign in front of the word.

4. Google Order of Search
The order in which you type your search query actually does have an effect on your search results. For example, if you are looking for a great waffle recipe, you’ll want to type in “waffle recipe” rather than “recipe waffle”.

5. Google Site Search
Google allows you to search an individual site for results. By typing in “site: -----.com movies” Google will only search that site for content on “movies”.

6. Google Number Range Search
You can use google to search for a range of numbers by adding two numbers separated by two periods for example, “xbox $200..$300”. This will tell google to search for an xbox between the price ranges $200 and $300. Any unit of measure will work.

7. Google Define
Google has an inbuilt dictionary you can use to define words. By typing in “define word” google will return a list of definitions and even articles that explain the definition.

8. Google Calculator
Google also has an inbuilt calculator. It can perform simple math problems and most importantly, convert measurements for example, 1cm to inch will return how many inches to 1cm.

9. Google Spellchecker
Google also automatically utilizes a spellchecker for whatever you type in the search box. Simply type the word and google will come back with this phrase: “Did you mean…(correct spelling)?”

10. Google Translate
If you ever come across a website that is written in a language other than English, you can ask google to translate the webpage and it will return the page in English although not perfect.

PIPA Collapses With 19 Senators Opposed

After the mass protest on January 18-19 which included popular sites Wikipedia, Reddit, Google and Mozilla, supporters of the PIPA slowly turned against the act, some even co-sponsors of the bill.

Marco Rubio, a freshman Republican Senator from Florida who some consider to be a rising star, withdrew his co-sponsorship of the bill, citing "legitimate concerns about the impact the bill could have on access to the Internet and about a potentially unreasonable expansion of the federal government's power to impact the Internet."

Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the chamber's longest-serving members and another co-sponsor, described the Protect IP Act as "simply not ready for prime time."

The tally is now up to 19 senators who have announced their opposition of PIPA, of which seven were former co-sponsors.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to bring PIPA to a vote on January 24. Reid rejected a request by six Senators for a postponement, saying "this is an issue that is too important to delay."

Internet Protest against SOPA and PIPA

Major tech companies are joining to highlight the issue of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act). The two anti-piracy bills, introduced in the US house of representatives would give the ability to U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia has announced that the site will be going down for 24 hours commencing tomorrow 4pm as protest. Popular social news sites Reddit and the Cheezburger network have also opposed the acts, going down tomorrow.

Google has also joined protest by planning to use its US homepage to draw attention to the two bills. It is believed that the acts would jeopardise freedom and the internet itself.

The White House also expressed concern stating that “While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.''

Tips To Improve Your WiFi Signal

  1. Router Positioning
Place your wireless router as close as possible to the central location of your home. If it is placed close the the outside wall of your home, the other side will receive a weaker signal. If your router is on the first floor and your wireless computer is on the second floor, place the router high on a shelf where the room is located.

    2.  Object Interference

Any metal objects, wall and floors will obstruct the routers wifi signal. The closer these objects are the more interference there will be, so move any objects away otherwise move the router itself.

   3.  Wireless Interference

There are other household electronics which emit wireless signals which can interfere with your Wifi such as cordless phones, microwaves, garage door keys.

   3.  Router Antenna

Some router antennas are designed to be removable and can be replaced with a high gain antenna. Standard antennas come as omnidirectional (emits signals in all directions) and a lot of the signal is lost to other areas. High gain directional antennas can amplify the signal to your laptop.

   4.  Wireless repeater

Wireless repeaters will extend the range of your wireless network without wiring. It acts as an access point where it receives your router signal boosts it at the new location. Place it in between your pc and router and you will notice an immediate gain.

  5. Firmware Upgrade

Router manufacturers occasionally release firmware updates which sometimes can improve the performance of your router. Visit your router manufacturer's website for these updates.

  6.  Wireless N

Make sure your equipment are all using wireless-n. Using wireless-b or wireless-g will slow down the speed and range of wireless signals on either end. Wireless-n (802.11n) is at least twice as fast and it has better range and stability. Consider replacing your router and network adapters with wireless-N equipment.

Ways to Promote Your Website's Google Ranking

Google's search engine results are determined by googlebot, google's software used to crawl through web pages for relevant content to keyword searches. It uses a variety of methods to determine which results are displayed first. Although no one knows their exact algorithm there are a few ways to boost your google ranking through search engine optimisation (SEO)

Keywords
The first thing google looks for is keywords related to the search, and how often those keywords appear on your page. Try to use as many keywords as you can to show that your page is relevant to what the user is searching for. However don't try to trick search engines by repeating the word over and over again with no meaning as this will usually penalise you and remove you from the search index. There are other methods of hiding keywords and these will result in the same.

Page Titles
Naming your pages correctly in the <title> tag is important. Try to include keywords in the title otherwise make it descriptive and related to the content. When your page appears on google's results the link is directed from the title. This creates the first impression of your web page even before they enter it.

Links
One of the biggest factors of page ranking is the number of links to and from your site. Links contribute in determining what type of content is on the page. Usually, the quality of links attracts higher priorities rather than quantity. The more people that link to your page, the more google recognises your site as a valuable resource.

Directory Registration
If you own a business there are online directories that you can register your company name for others to search for. These also count as links to your site and may increase website traffic.

Social Networking
Social networking sites can be a potentially useful way to promote your site to others via updates and statuses. You can reach more people if your site is new and may not have established a firm grounding on the internet.

Website Design
A website with good design and well organised pages will tend to rank more highly in google. Making a website with a web design company will ensure that your site makes an impact on the internet as soon as it is established.
